How do I get listed?

The only place you can apply is by using the application form on the application page. If it isn’t accepting responses, please do not reach out to us to ask… Just check back later to see if it has been reopened. If you can’t see the form on the page, make sure you allowlist HHA with your ad blocker.

Who is Hire Human Artists?

Hire human artists is a small group of professional and hobby artists who are examining artworks, personal and professional connections, and more to determine if a portfolio, when presented to us, may have traces of generative AI use. There are about 14 of us who cycle through applications and review them. Applications take a minimum of 5 votes of yes to be considered “approved”.

How long does it take to get approved and listed on HHA?

It depends on how quickly we can get 5 people to vote on each application and portfolio. Sometimes it can take a few weeks, but since this is all volunteer, on occasion it can take longer. We will email you and let you know when your application is approved.

Why can’t I add a shop URL? Why do you only want portfolio URLs?

The Hire Human Artist directory is meant to be used by people looking to hire artists for use in creating custom artwork, or licensing existing artwork. We encourage people to use their very best portfolio. Sometimes, this means a primary social media link, as people may not have a true portfolio. Whichever it is, please ensure that your portfolio is highly visible and easy to get to. We are not, at this time, supporting merchandise/shop links, and will silently decline any application that is submitted with only a shop link attached. We may change this in the future, however!

I applied for a free listing. How do I get an image to go with my listing?

You can purchase an image for your listing on Ko-fi for $1. You will want to upload a 800×600 pixel jpg. All images will be condensed/compressed prior to upload. If a jpg is not supplied or is not provided to size, it will be converted to jpg and sized to 800×600.

Why are you charging $1 to add an image?

Since Hire Human Artists has moved from a free spreadsheet to a full-blown directory website, hosting costs are now a thing. While we’re doing our best to reduce images down to fit on the website as best as possible, hosting, domain registration, maintenance, backups, etc all cost time and money. If you want to change your image, you will pay $1 anytime you request a new image be installed. We will see roughly $.40 of each $1, which will help offset costs of maintaining this beast.

How can I become a featured listing?

The only featured listings are currently people who are part of the vetting team, as a thank you for all of the hard work they’ve put in. There’s not currently any plans to extend featured listings beyond that, but we’ll let you know if that changes.

You don’t guarantee that artists on this directory are AI-free, why is that?

Things change. From the time we’ve vetted someone to the time you get to them, it’s possible the artist has decided to adopt generative AI in their workflow (though we hope not). While you can start out finding people in this directory with a good idea that they are likely not using generative AI, you should always do your due diligence in vetting any artist and protecting yourself with a contract so if something does go wrong, you can at least recuperate your money.

Can you include musicians/writers/etc?

We would love to include these creative professionals as well! Unfortunately, however, our vetting team consists of visual artists who are well versed in visual art, so we don’t currently have people who can vet music or writing. If this is you, however, please feel free to reach out!
